Meet the Nelson Earthworks team

Simon Marshall - Nelson Earthworks Ltd. Owner and Operator

Simon Marshall

Owner and Operator

At the age of 10, Simon had his first experience driving a truck on the family farm, and has been passionate about machinery and property development ever since. With experience in cropping in Australia, mining on the West Coast and developing and improving his own land, setting up Nelson Earthworks in 2004 was an obvious choice when Simon, and his wife Carolyn left farming.

“In our team we have highly experienced and competent operators, and everyone is hardworking and keen to achieve the best result. It’s a great day for me when I come to site, see the gear running to potential and know that the client’s going to be well happy with the result.”

Dylan Hedges

Excavator operator

Dylan brings extensive knowledge and experience in earthworks, drainage and road construction. Dylan has completed a New Zealand Certificate in Infrastructure Works for both earthworks and road construction and is also recognised as a certified Civil Tradesperson. Dylan has great enthusiasm for excavator work as he enjoys turning people's dreams into reality.

"Considerable stints of my civil construction career have focused on environmental management and surveying, but being hands-on is still my favourite part of the job. No matter how big or small a job is I always approach them in a professional manner to achieve the best result for our clients."

Hayden Starrenburg

Excavator operator

Hayden first joined the Nelson Earthworks team in 2019, and holds his Class 1-6 and W, T & R licenses.

“After my first stint in 2019 I left for a while in 2021 to get some more trucking experience doing class 5 linehaul work. In the beginning of 2022 I came back to focus more on the excavator side of operations and I've been gaining experience in the machines working alongside Dylan and Simon and more recently working out on jobs by myself. I am loving the job and the varied work that we are able to do and am always learning something new.”

Natalie Marshall

Marketing Manager

Currently living in Tokyo and studying towards her Masters in International Business, Natalie works remotely on the company’s marketing and corporate strategy.

“As a 17-year-old I had my first experience working for Nelson Earthworks Ltd, when I obtained my W, T & R license and worked over the summer holidays operating machinery. I am proud to be involved in the family business, and to be able to apply my business studies to the strategic direction of the company”
